The other day, one of my daughters brought home a snack that she had purchased at the supermarket after school. It was a Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Cereal Bar. Not being a big fan or packaged snacks, I happened to pick up the wrapper to see how healthy this snack is before she popped it into her mouth.

Did you know that federal regulations governing school food don’t apply to the snack and junk food sold in your school’s cafeteria and vending machines? That is about to change. The USDA will soon announce guidelines for “competitive” foods sold in schools – that is, all the food that competes with school meals, which are already regulated by the National School Lunch Program. A USDA Press release touts these highlights from the “Smart Snacks in School” new standards:

TOBACCO LAWSUIT-WINNING LAWYERS SUING THE FOOD INDUSTRY FOR FALSE CLAIMS
Although the lawyers may be motivated by the potential payoff, I think these lawsuits will get people to pay attention and maybe even hold Big Food accountable for the burgeoning cost of chronic illness in the US. I am the franchise representative for Fresh Healthy Vending in Connecticut. Our mission is to carry only healthy choices in our machines. We have encountered great resistance to placement of our machines in schools throughout the state. I am asking this organization for help in spreading the word to schools to enlist our services to help fight childhood obesity in their facilities. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
